Crappie

The crappie continue to bite although a lot of small "under legal size" fish are being caught. There have been some good quality keeper fish caught but it seems some days are better than others. The guides are still fishing and catching their crappie in 12 to 15 foot manmade structure on the Big Sandy. They are vertical fishing minnows and some are tipping jigs with minnows. There are some fishermen who pull or long-line jigs and crankbaits that are beginning to catch some crappie in the deeper depths as some of the crappie are beginning to move toward their summertime patterns of deeper water along the ledges or dropoffs. Reports say a lot of small crappie are being caught by the trollers but that will change in due time and they will catch larger fish.

Bass

Some recent big money bass tournaments have taken place in the past couple of weeks on KY Lake. Today (Saturday June 17) a tournament out of Paris Landing State Park drew approx 115 boats. I attended the weigh-in but left before it was over and the winner had 21 lbs in five bass. Big fish of the event weighed slighty over 6 lbs. There were several teams with five bass weighing in the 15 lb range. The majority of these bass were caught by fishing deeper ledges along the main TN River channels or on the Big Sandy Basin dropoffs/ledges. Crankbaits, jigs and carolina rigs accounted for most of those fish caught in deep water. Other fishermen fished in shallow water and caught bass but the winner fished deep ledges.

Bluegill

For the most part the bluegill have spawned . There are always a few late spawners and some can still be caught on the beds but for the remainder of the summer most of the bluegill will be caught under the willow fly hatches along the shoreline. You can cast small jigs, spinners and top water poppers for the bluegill under those willow flies hatches.

Catfish

Most of the catfish have spawned and are returning to deep water ledges along the river channel. This is not to say some fish can't be caught shallow along the rocks but most have spawned and left shallow water (4-5 ft). Some fishermen are attempting to jug or drift fish but reports are slow since there hasn't been enough river current to get the cats in a feeding mood. Vertical fishing the dropoffs along the main river channel will start paying off in depths of 25 to 45 feet but there needs to be current for that type fishing to be successful also.
